One thing many blog owners with RSS feeds may not know is that your RSS feed may be delivering your FULL articles to these sites. The problem with this is that those that use the service pulling your feed, never have to leave that site to read your content! You may not even be aware that this was case! So how do you change your RSS feed in WordPress to only show a teaser (summary) of your article instead of the full deal?

In WordPress backend, go to

Settings > Reading

Look for For each article in a feed, show = Select Summary and click Save Changes and then it will only show a partial of the article being pulled and the user on the aggregator site will need to click your title to read the rest of the article. This forces the user to visit your site directly as they should if they wish to read the full article.

There are hundreds of plugins and services which can provide statistics about your visitors. WordPress.com Stats plugin for WordPress that keeps track of view counts of individual pages.

Installing this WordPress.com Stats plugin after that need is to put in API Key and the rest is automatic. Once it’s running it’ll begin collecting information about page views, which posts and pages are the most popular, where your traffic is coming from, and what people click on when they leave. It’ll also add a link to your dashboard which allows you to see all stats on a single page.

Finally, because all of the processing and collection runs on their servers and not yours, WordPress.com Stats plugin doesn’t cause any additional load on your hosting account. In fact, it’s one of the fastest stats systems, hosted or not hosted, that you can use.

I’m having a problem with the Google XML Sitemaps plugin. When I open it with Firefox I get:

Error loading stylesheet: An XSLT stylesheet does not have an XML mimetype:

http://mydomain.com/sitemap.xsl

I got the answer from there. It works but output is quite ugly. I had to modify the document by adding xslt to the text/xsl/xslt.

<?xml-stylesheet type=”text/xsl/xslt” href=”http:// mydomain.com /blog/wp-content/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/sitemap.xsl”?>

Then open your .htaccess file in an editor and insert this:

AddType application/xml .xsl

That solved the problem for me.

Optimal Title mirrors the function of wp_title() exactly, but moves the position of the ‘separator’ to after the title rather than before. This allows you to have your blog name tacked on to the end of the page title instead of having it appear first.

Having your page information appear before your blog name in the title is advantageous because it provides more meaningful search engine results and browser bookmark names. The text that appears between your
<title></title>
tags is used to generate both of these things, and will often be truncated when viewed. Because of this, it is more effective to have words directly relating to the content of your page appears before common markers. Not only will the titles be more meaningful, but they will also be more scan able when being viewed in a list. For more information see the plugin’s homepage.

What options can be passed to optimal_title()?

Optimal Title functions in the exact same way as wp_title(), and thus you may specify the following options:

<?php optimal_title('separator', display); ?>

separator – (string) Text to display between portions of the title (i.e. the separator), such as the archive elements of year and month.

display – (boolean) Display the page title (TRUE), or return it for use in PHP (FALSE).

What specifically needs to be changed in the header.php file?

The simplest answer is to remove everything between the HTML
<title></title>
tags and then put the following code in its place:

<?php optimal_title(); ?> <?php bloginfo('name'); ?>

If you want a slightly safer version that won’t break if you do not have the plugin activated or installed, then try something like this in between the HTML
<title></title>
tags:

<?php

if ( function_exists('optimal_title') )

{

optimal_title(); bloginfo('name');

}

else

{

bloginfo('name'); wp_title();

}

?>

<?php if ( is_home() ) { ?> | <?php bloginfo('description'); } ?>

Automattic Kismet (Akismet for short) is a collaborative effort to make comment and trackback spam a non-issue and restore innocence to blogging, so you never have to worry about spam again.

Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen.

You don’t have to do anything to configure Akismet besides entering your API key, just activate and relax. However you do need at least WordPress version 2.0 or above for everything to work. The latest version of the plugin is 2.0.

Want to show off how much spam Akismet has caught for you? Just put <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template.
